Glasgow's Ancient and Modern Sides
Many cities benefit from being close to rivers and Glasgow is no exception. The River Clyde was one of the main reasons why people settled in this area in centuries gone by.
Glasgow has developed and grown by leaps and bounds to reach the modern day settlement. There are still plenty of ways that you can look back at the city’s past and appreciate the history of the city and how it has come to be the place it is today.
The Trades Hall is one such place worth visiting during your stay in Glasgow. Built in the late 18th century by renowned Scottish architect Robert Adam, the Trades Hall has a majestic and detailed exterior which sits well even with the more modern buildings in the city.
Glasgow Cathedral is similarly stunning both inside and out. As with many churches and cathedrals, much rebuilding has gone on through its history, but we know it has roots stretching back beyond 1136.
When you visit the cathedral you will find yourself entering and looking along the length of the building. It is an impressive sight and one which draws you in to find out more. The stained glass windows certainly attract the eye, but these are modern additions which are barely more than half a century old.
If you really want to go back in time make sure you see Fossil Grove. You will find it in the very modern and relaxed looking Victoria Park, which makes the discovery all the more breathtaking.
Fossil Grove itself is a number of fossilised trees that are left over from a huge forest existing some 330 million years ago. It is a small and protected display, but it is well worth seeing. By contrast the park it appears in has only been open for about a century!
Modern Glasgow also has much to offer to the eager tourist. While you are staying you might get the chance to see a show at the Clyde Auditorium. Even if that isn’t a possibility you will want to see it from a distance anyway. This is because the Auditorium is affectionately known as the Armadillo, because of the likeness of the design to the animal itself.
It is the way both old and new blend together in Glasgow that makes it a place worth visiting. You can discover plenty more sights to see of all ages when you arrive, and Glasgow flights are arriving frequently to make it easy to get there and start your short break or holiday.
If you can do some research before you go and make a note of all the places you wish to visit, then you can get straight into the action once you arrive. There’s no better way to enjoy Glasgow than by diving straight in.

How does modern Gothic writing differ from that of the 19th century writers?
Modern Gothic writing is more obsessed by sex, and is often tagged as fiction with vampires in it by the illiterate. Why do you ask?
